Which exterior cladding material is right for you? We compare aluminium composite, HPL, ceramic, solid aluminium and natural stone on looks, durability, maintenance and cost.
When choosing an exterior cladding material you need to look beyond appearance to durability, fire rating, maintenance and total cost. Here is a short comparison of the five most common cladding materials.
1. Aluminium composite panel
Light, flat and available in a wide range of colours — ideal for commercial buildings and corporate identity. Choose A2 or B fire-rated panels.
2. Solid aluminium panel
Made from single-skin aluminium 2–4 mm thick. Suitable for perforated, embossed and three-dimensional forms; being non-combustible (A1) is a big advantage. It costs more than composite.
3. HPL (high-pressure laminate)
Offers wood and natural textures. Impact- and UV-resistant, it gives residential and educational buildings a warm look. Watch the fire rating.
4. Ceramic and porcelain
Extremely resistant to scratches, chemicals and fading, with very low maintenance. Its weight requires a strong substructure.
5. Natural stone
A prestigious, timeless look — but heavy and expensive. It should be installed on a ventilated hook-on system.
Comparison table
| Material | Weight | Fire | Maintenance | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Composite panel | Light | A2 / B | Low | Medium |
| Solid aluminium | Light | A1 | Low | Medium–high |
| HPL | Medium | B | Low | Medium |
| Ceramic | Heavy | A1 | Very low | Medium–high |
| Natural stone | Very heavy | A1 | Medium | High |
Conclusion: no single answer, but a right combination
